The Bang Bang Club : A Movie Review

Chup, sebelum aku teruskan review aku nak cakap yang The Bang Bang Club ni dihasilkan dalam bentuk dokumentari. Tiada hujung pangkal.
Siapa yang tak tahu Pulitzer Prize tu apa pergi terjun bangunan atau boleh Google je. Kang tak beraya pulak.
Dan siapa yang tak tahu Kevin Carter tuh siapa meh aku nak bagitau. Hehe.

Pernah tengok gambar ni? Or have you accidentally stumbled upon this photo on the interweb? Gambar ni telah menang Pulitzer Prize (again, kalau tak tahu please terjun bangunan) pada tahun 1994. Three months after the photo was captured, the photographer committed suicide due to depression and he was the legendary Kevin Carter. Or at least he was in my book.

The movie was based on a true story of four combat photographers in South Africa circa 1990s - around the final days of apartheid in South Africa. Kevin Carter, Greg Marinovich and two others worked for a newspaper company. They traveled together into the heart of South Africa and witnessed the most horrible conflicts among Nelson Mandela supporters and the opposition. The conflicts, starvation, poverty to name a few were portrayed way too graphic and I think some of them were not suitable for children.

These characters somehow developed along the line. The hardships they witnessed had changed them (some were depressed, some were addicted to marijuana) and they were not the same people they were at the beginning of the movie. Despite this, they developed a lasting bond among themselves and people started to recognize them as a group, which was aptly named The Bang Bang Club.
Kevin Carter (played by Taylor Kitsch)
As a fan of true stories, I think the adaptations were perfect. Stephen Silver as the director tried his best to re-live those meaningful moments and he succeeded. The most touching scene was probably when Kevin was asked by someone at his press conference after he won the Pulitzer Prize, whether he helped chasing the vulture away from attacking the starving kid or not?

I won't tell you the answer. Watch and ponder - what would you do if you were Kevin?

ps: 4.5 stars as I'm feeling generous tonight.
